I recently finished the historical fiction book The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe. The story follows the main character Dita Kraus, a 16 year old Jewish girl living in a concentration camp during the Holocaust. She has been deemed the librarian of Auschwitz because she is brave enough to hide books for children and teachers to read at the camp. This is gallant because books are outlawed in the camp and she could be killed.
A quote from the book that changed me is "Brave people are not the ones who aren't afraid. Those are reckless people who ignore the risk; they put themselves and others in danger. That's not the sort of person I want on my team. I need the ones who know the risk--whose legs shake, but carry on.” Dita's mentor Freddie told her this when she was scared of being caught with the books. I can sometimes be challenged by fear in a situation, so I learned from the book that it is okay to be scared, but I should push through my fear anyway, especially if it is for something worthwhile. Dita and Freddie's bravery were inspiring, so in the future, I will remember Dita's lesson and apply it to times I need to have courage.
